The place to experience maximum totality will be on a cruise ship off the coast of Reykjavik, Iceland. The chances of a clear sky are much higher in northern Spain, but the eclipse will be much lower, so sight lines will be key. From the Spanish island of Mallorca, it will even be possible to see a "sunset totality" featuring a golden corona (as long as there are clear skies).

Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania, Seabourn and Silversea, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle. A hybrid eclipse, which occurs only seven times in the 21st century, combines an annular (or "ring of fire") solar eclipse and a total solar eclipse. However, the short duration and small shadow are crucial, with informed eclipse chasers destined to enjoy an extended display of Baily's beads and a lingering diamond ring before and after totality. A "ring of fire" will be visible from the coast of Panama for 25 seconds. However, all eyes will be on Luxor, where an eclipsed sun will be visible from the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Hatshepsut. A whopping 89 million people will experience totality in 2027 — far more than witnessed the 2024 total solar eclipse in North America.

Even if everything else on board was terrible, and it wasn’t, the staff alone would make the experience memorable. The Have-It-All did not include the laundry package, but we used part of our onboard credit to cover the cost. At first, I laughed at the laundry package, thinking, who needs that? Additionally, when you want to watch the sunset from your patio, you can have your dinners delivered from the main dining room.

The ship’s high-octane Orange Party was a fun-filled celebration to remember, too. After sailing through Glacier Bay National Park, our ship arrived at Icy Strait Point for a several hour visit. Privately owned and operated by Huna Totem Corporation, this lovely port near Glacier Bay immerses visitors in Alaska’s beauty and Native Tlingit culture. The verandah room was spacious enough, though, with plenty of storage in the closets and drawers, as well as a space under the bed for suitcases. As long as we were good about putting things back in their place, the room was totally fine for the three of us. One of my concerns was feeling cramped in a tiny room with our stuff everywhere and all of the free space taken up by our travel crib.

The Aleutian Ballad sails along the protected waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage during the three-hour excursion, and wildlife is plentiful. We watched as the crew hauled crabs, octopus, fish, and other marine life onboard, and it was fun to hold some of them as well. One of the most memorable highlights was watching dozens of bald eagles circling and diving for fish near lovely Annette Island. The final Alaskan port of call on our cruise itinerary was Ketchikan, home to the F/V Aleutian Ballad. The commercial crab fishing boat was made famous in the second season of the Discovery Channel’s award-winning “Deadliest Catch” reality TV series.
The train has two levels, and the dome-shaped upper level has big windows so you can really take in the views. The lower level has a dining car, where you can get breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The Sea View Terrace offers a huge space to look out over the wake, swim in the pool, enjoy the hot tubs get a drink at the Sea View Bar or have a slice of pizza or other meals outdoors at the tables here. Eurodam has a limited sports court space on 11 at the aft of the ship, with an enclosed netted in area that catches way too much of the wind when sailing to allow effective sports play. It is a half-court basketball goal; and the surface also is used for pickleball sessions.

As I understand is common on cruise ships, there are some extras, like internet and drinks, that you can opt to pay for as a package. The Quench package included espresso drinks, smoothies, and water cans. We also enjoyed the jogging track on the 11th floor for panoramic views. It was a great spot to get some exercise and take Felix for his beloved stroller walks with the ever-changing scenery.
